Classical Mythology, From Athena to Zeus, Professor Elizabeth Vandiver, Professor of Classics and Clement Biddle Penrose Professor of Latin at Whitman College, leads an illuminating exploration of classical mythology and its treasure trove of unforgettable characters and stories. This course introduces the primary figures and most important stories of Greek and Roman mythology, including the creation of the world in Hesiod\u2019s Theogony and Ovid\u2019s Metamorphoses, the gods such as Zeus, Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Hermes, Dionysos, and Aphrodite, the Greek heroes Theseus and Hercules, and the famous myth of the Trojan War. You will also examine the challenges of studying mythology, which is rooted in oral tradition and pre-literate society, through the literary works that recount these tales.<\/p>\n

Professor Vandiver anchors her presentation by addressing foundational questions: What is a myth? Which societies use myths? What are the challenges in studying classical mythology? The course also discusses the most influential 19th- and 20th-century theories about the nature and function of myth, including the psychological perspectives of Freud and Jung and the metaphysical approach of Joseph Campbell. Throughout, you will gain a deeper understanding of the enduring power and complexity of classical myths.<\/p>\n
