Many Windows-based disk image mounting solutions mount the contents of disk images as shares or partitions, rather than as complete disks (also called “physical” or “real”). This limitation limits the usefulness of these tools for digital forensics professionals and other users. Arsenal Image Mounter mounts the contents of disk images as complete disks in Windows. From the perspective of Windows, the contents of disk images mounted by this software are treated as real SCSI disks, allowing users to take advantage of special disk features.
Program features and functions
- Mount as Full SCSI Disks: This software presents the contents of disk images to Windows as real SCSI disks . This mount method simulates the full features of a physical disk, unlike mounting as a partition or share. This capability is critical for digital forensics professionals who need to interact at the physical disk level.
- Take advantage of advanced Windows disk features: By emulating real SCSI disks, users can take advantage of all the disk-specific features supported by the Windows operating system. These features include:
- Integration with Disk Manager: Allows direct management of the installed disk through the standard Windows Disk Management tool.
- Launching Virtual Machines: There is the ability to use the mounted disk image to boot and run virtual machines, which can include bypassing the usual Windows authentication process.
- BitLocker Management: Allows you to manage, unlock, and interact with BitLocker-encrypted volumes contained within the disk image.
- Mount Volume Shadow Copies: Volume shadow copies can be accessed and mounted, which is very useful for recovering data or examining previous versions of the file system.
System requirements
- Operating System: 64-bit Windows 10 (v1703+), Windows 11, or Server 2016/2019 is recommended for all features. It can function on earlier versions like Windows 7 and Server 2012/2012 R2 as well, but some advanced features may be limited.
- .NET Framework: A specific version of the .NET Desktop Runtime is required, which depends on the AIM version.
