Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a Path Vector exterior gateway protocol used to exchange routing information between routers in different autonomous systems. It is the backbone that enables the Internet and is designed for robustness and scalability. After BGP peers form neighbor relationships they exchange full routing tables and then send only incremental or triggered updates. BGP maintains three main tables (neighbor, BGP, and routing), relies on AS numbers (public 1-64511, private 64512-65535), communicates over TCP port 179, uses attributes as its routing metric, and has administrative distances of 20 for eBGP and 200 for iBGP with typical update intervals of 30 seconds for eBGP and 5 seconds for iBGP.
