Air Insulated Substation Design Part 3, Air insulated substations are the most common type of substation on the electrical network because of their cost effectiveness and simplicity. In part 3 of this course we examine additional features of this type of substation with a focus on DC systems that supply protection and control so monitoring and control can continue when the main AC supply fails. You will study all the DC systems encountered inside a typical transmission-level substation and we introduce more advanced interlocking principles beyond those discussed in part 2.
Protection panels house protection and control equipment; in this course we examine their construction and the protection-specific devices they contain. You will learn about current transformers (CTs): their key features, how they operate in normal and fault conditions, and how to interpret the parameters shown on a CT rating plate. Likewise, the course explains how voltage transformers (VTs) operate and how they should be connected to the secondary protection system. By the end you will have a deeper appreciation of these key substation systems.
